Lupine thrive in full to part sun with rich soil, so mix a bit of compost in at planting time. The nicely mounded plants are deer resistant and will attract hummingbirds. Lupine can be short lived so leave a few spent flower stalks to go to seed each year to keep your patch full and vigorous. Even when plants are young, the unique leaf shape is easy to identify. This makes plucking or transplanting stray seedlings an easy task.
