Bee Balm

Monarda, or bee balm, is in the mint family. It has a spreading habit that is well suited to borders or with other spreaders for a nice naturalized garden. Bee balm attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. Summertime flowers come in reds, pinks, lavenders, and whites. Remove older flowers to keep plants looking tidy and to promote longer blooming. Regular division every 3-4 years will keep the plants vigorous. Select varieties resistant to powdery mildew or thin out a few stems early in the season to discourage its spread.
