Hellebore is an evergreen plant that has dark green leathery leaves. In our arid climate it is very common for the foliage to scorch and turn brown over the winter. If this occurs, simply trim the dead foliage like any other perennial, and it will be quickly replaced. Elegant cup shaped flowers are a welcome sight in early spring with colors of pale pink, chartreuse, white, or a dramatic dark purple. Hellebore perform the best in partial to full shade and would benefit from the addition of compost in clay soils.
